Oxfam EU at Mundo Madou: Advocating for justice and policy change from Brussels
We all know Oxfam, but did you know that Oxfam EU is at Mundo Madou? The EU office fights inequality and injustice by advocating for decision-makers in EU institutions and European countries to make better EU policies related to gender justice, climate justice, poverty and much much more.
How do they influence decision-makers? They use various strategies to advocate for their causes such as meeting with the European Parliament, Commission and other European decision-makers in Brussels: “This week, representatives from our partners in Peru and Colombia will be meeting with European governments to address the adverse impact of European companies in their countries. We use evidence from our global programs to demonstrate the repercussions of EU policies and present these findings to Brussels decision-makers, asking them to take action. Additionally, our advocacy involves securing media coverage, writing reports, and coalition-building with other NGOs, including those at Mundo Madou. We work closely with allies to educate decision-makers, employing a diverse range of tactics to effectively convey our message”, explains Evelien van Roemburg, Head of Oxfam EU’s office.
The current situation, especially with the rise of right-wing and extreme right-wing parties in Europe, adds an extra layer of difficulty to tackle issues related to climate change, justice and migration. Nevertheless, they find motivation and can count on a comforting work environment: “It helps to be in a supportive building when you work on challenging issues. Mundo Madou, whether relaxing in the courtyard, savoring a soup from Tandem, or using the Chill Zone, makes our workdays better.”
